PARSEL PROJECT

The training is not a burden. Some of the training topics and exercises are very useful, and we are using the training topics in class. For example, emotion regulation is useful for students as well as teachers. We also have to control our emotions. So, now we know how to control our emotions – we have to name them, what kinds of feelings, and what our emotions are.
The interactive workshop activity on kindness with the students is also very helpful. Usually, we don’t take an interest in others; we are only interested in ourselves. Now the students know why they should be interested in the well-being of others. This is useful for them and us too. It is very effective.

Teacher Roi Ji Ja
Before the course, we control the students by saying, “Quiet,” “Stop.” We don’t often give the students an opportunity to tell their stories. After doing this training, I use a more patient approach and allowed the students to share their stories. I have intervened and helped resolve interpersonal disputes between students, which I did not do before, sharing about kindness and caring for each other. Students are also more forgiving and caring toward each other now.

There is some very useful learning for preschoolers too. It is usually very difficult to get them quiet after lunch. They are very active. The lime-squeezing activity, for example, helps them to come back to the present moment, and we have been using that until today. The turtle-head activity is also very helpful. Also, it is difficult for children to say ‘sorry.’ So, how do we help them? We show them by example that it is easy to say ‘sorry.’ it's been useful.

Before the training, we see naughty children as naughty, bad, or terrible. The training helped us to see that all kids are different and that we have to accept them as they are and understand them. Doing the interactive workshop on emotion regulation with the children helped us to see what they were going through. Now I also get feedback from parents to understand my students better to help them in class.

Before the training, I focused on lesson plans and getting students to focus on learning alone. With the help of the training, I learned to care for and love children. For instance, I used to check on their homework when they came back to class. I still do, but I will first look at them and their facial expressions; I will check if they are sick or unwell before I check their homework. That's what I learned … I see how embarrassing it is to get the kids to fear you as a teacher … so I learned that we have to make a change first, we have to change first so that we can lead them as teachers effectively.

Teacher Seng Hkwan
I do not like to see children treating others differently or bullying another person. It made me very angry because I grew up getting bullied. With the training, I learned to explore why the kid is bullying and learned how to empathize with them. I teach the students to be kind to each other. With the changes that we observed from this kind of kid, it makes us happy.

Teacher Blessing
The content of this program is really acceptable to all of us, especially in teaching. I just used to focus on my lesson plans. This training really changed me and my method my teaching and communication with the students. I learned that teaching is also about guiding, caring, showing respect, and praising and honoring the students. If the students are unruly, I used to use a stick to hit the whiteboard and to let them shut down their voice and their talking. Now I use different strategies to manage the classroom. Before, I used to shout a lot. Now I don’t shout so much. This training is really effective for me as well, and it's really acceptable to me.

I have learned many things. Especially how to control myself emotionally and also teach the student to show kindness to the children, To train them to love themselves. I found deep breathing and squeezing lemons activities very useful for quietening them down. I also learned that to understand and support children, we have to work with their parents. I also came to know that I have to look at the background and family context of the students to understand their behavior and performance. In my life, this training has been the best ever since I worked in the KRLC from 2012 because we can gather, finish it, and support also, and then we learned many things.

This training was very useful because it is the first time I am teaching in a school and working with children. I have seen that there are many ways of controlling the classroom room and teaching. And then I also care for the older kids; I learn to care for their feelings. And then, I ask them to share their feelings and then encourage them. And I see that over time, they become quite friendly with me. I can use the leaning as a Sunday School teacher also.
