THE STORY OF KAM AGONG (2018)

 A Film by Agnes Padan

Producers: Agnes Padan, Lawrence Jayaraj, & Wong Chin Hor

Year: 2018
Duration: 30 mins
Language: Lun Bawang
Subtitles: English & Bahasa Malaysia

Agnes Padan was born on 10 April 1979 in Long Semadoh, Lawas Sarawak. She is the eldest daughter amongst 8 children. She is married with 5 children.
Her father is Padan Labo and her mother Kam Agong sadly died due to medical negligence following postpartum
complications in Lawas, Sarawak. Her parents were farmers in Long Semadoh.

Agnes lost her mother on March 19 2002 and had to embrace and care for her seven siblings and her father. She educated her four under-aged siblings. This was the most difficult and challenging time for her and her family. In 2003, she initiated an investigation over her mother’s death. In 2008, after many failed attempts by the defendants and federal counsel for an out-of-court settlement, the Session Court found the defendants guilty of medical negligence and the High Court judge upheld the decision. Since 2002 Agnes began a campaign for better healthcare access and maternal healthcare in rural Sarawak, with a special focus on Lawas district.

In March 2018 Agnes was approached by the Freedom Film Network to make a documentary about her late mother Kam Agong and the standard of maternal healthcare in Lawas and her quest for justice. Agnes prepared the script, transcripts and was closely involved in the post-production of the documentary “The Story of Kam Agong”.

In September 2018 this documentary was screened at Freedom Film Fest 2018. Please visit kamagong.org for more information.
